Spring Break!

The kids were out of school for Spring Break and we wanted to do something that didn't require a lot of travel (since we get plenty of that). We decided to explore a place nearby called the San Rafael Swell. We really enjoy seeing beautiful places that are practically in our backyards - no matter where we live. We packed a lunch and loaded up in the truck because we'd be off-roading it for quite a while. I grabbed a good book and we were off, until we realized we didn't have the camera. Of course we had to come back!

Nate had found a really cool guided tour book with a map that helped us find all the cool things along the way. It was a great book.

Our first stop had us hiking down into a canyon at Rochester Creek where we found this cool wall that had Indian petroglphs on it. It was really quite fascinating and made me yearning to learn more about them and what the pictures mean.

Our favorite wall at Rochester Creek.
Nate and Savy
Madi liked to scare us by getting close to edges.
Our second stop was the small town of Castle Dale. They had a really nice museum there with dinosaurs and lots of indian artifacts. The kids sweet talked their dad into buying them bags of pretty rocks and Parker got a 3D post card of a dinosaur. We also went to a great Pioneer Museum with lots cool old things. Ashley loved it and said that it was her favorite part of the trip.

These walls sure reminded us of Lake Powell.
My baby is sure growing up.
Our little family.
This was a beautiful place called the "Little Grand Canyon".
We ate our lunch over-looking this beautiful canyon and Savannah got to take a nap. Wow!
One of our favorite stops was searching for this dinosaur track.

Another really cool Indian petroglyph at Buckhorn Wash.
Overall, it was a great day and we were glad we went. Sometimes these little day trips that don't cost much money are just as fun as the long expensive ones are!

I looked at your blog once when it said you published but the post was blank so I clicked back today and here it was! That is such a cool place to have so close. It's amazing all the fun stuff that we can find near us I think. I love all the pictures, and am glad you could get away for a little while during Spring Break. Fun update.

what a fun little trip! I love exploring all of the great places in utah, too. petroglyphs and pictographs are so amazing to see, it almost boggles my mind to think about how long they have been there. very cool! (and thanks for the nice comment you left on my blog.)

I also looked when you posted, it came up on google reader and it was blank, but it's here today! Looks like you had lots of fun. My boys would be in heaven there. I agree that the little day trips are about if not more fun than the big trips. Madi looks like she's getting so tall.
